Art Appreciation: Sir John's Master Class Goes Beyond the Ma

It use to be that if you were a successful celebrity makeup artist or hairstylist, you hit it big and wrote a book (see: Kevyn Aucoin, Bobbi Brown, and Jemma Kidd). At least that's how I remember it. But these days, those who beautify A-listers for a living aren't putting pen to paper, they're putting mouth to microphone and meeting their fans face-to-face with live master classes. Jen Atkin did it. Mario Dedivanovic did it. And now Sir John is doing it, right smack in the middle of New York Fashion Week. But this isn't your average "learn how to contour like your favorite celebrity" sort of deal. Sure, you'll walk away with some great tips (more on that in a second), but you'll also walk away with something much more—something that will help you better understand how a professional makeup artist works and thinks. Would you expect any less from someone who works with Beyoncé for a living?

It's not even called a master class. Sure, there will be an "intimate beauty seminar" during the event, but that's only after you've walked through an instillation of artwork—paintings, three dimensional pieces, and video—inspired by Sir John's best makeup work. It sounds vain, but The Sir John Beauty Gallery is meant to provide guests with a better understanding of makeup as an art form. "I want people to see how art and beauty parallel and coincide because there's no major difference between what [artists] do and what we do on a day-to-day basis, it's just a different medium," says the former (fine) artist and art history student. "I want them to look at makeup in a completely different way."

To do that, Sir John has enlisted the skills from a variety of artists including painters Santiago (“Santi”) Sigüenza and Sarah Golish, illustrators Donald Robertson and John Zylstra, and installation artist Ya Levy La’ford. "Honestly, it's a master class second," he admits. "The goal for me is to bring [attendees] to an environment that pushes their knowledge beyond what makeup actually is. Everything is so literal today—how do I contour, hack this, hack that. That's cool, but let's also have a conversation about why we do a cat eye; why Cleopatra influenced Sophia Loren, who then influenced Madonna, who influenced me and my work with Beyoncé. I want to provoke people's knowledge and create a place for inspiration and aspiration."

That being said, you will still get a tutorial on some of the makeup artist’s best-kept secrets. During our chat, Sir John hinted he'd be sharing tips on "luminance and light reflection" (foundation tips and highlighting, hopefully?) as well as how to "make eyes and cheekbones more three-dimensional" (how to make features really standout in pictures, maybe?). "I don't want to show them ways to cheat anything. I want to give them useful tips they can keep in their arsenal," he says.

And since it’s during fashion week, Sir John also wants to give people a party, calling up some of his famous friends and bringing on Moët & Chandon as a sponsor. “I want it to be fun,” he says. He also wants to give people a peek into the crazy fashion world of which he is part of. “I want it to open up fashion week and the fashion industry—which can normally be so exclusive and niche—to everyone, whether you’re a makeup artist or someone just obsessed with beauty in general. I keep thinking, it’s the type of thing I wish was available when I was younger.”
